BLENDING THEORY AND PRACTICE

The graduate programs in economics at Waterloo produce students with a strong understanding of theory, superior research skills, and perhaps most important, an ability to apply this training to issues relevant to the public and private sectors.

Our faculty research interests are primarily in Public Economic Policy, which broadly covers applied microeconomic fields in public finance, labour, natural resources and the environment, industrial organization, and health. We are also particularly strong in applied econometrics.

We offer a well-established MA degree within an intimate and collegial learning environment. Reflecting a strong tradition at UW, the MA may be pursued as either a regular or co-op program. The co-op program enables students with strong academic records, to gain significant work experience through an eight month job placement. We are one of the very few economics departments in North America that offers a co-op program at the graduate level and many of our students have been fortunate to have their co-op positions translate into permanent jobs. In this respect, we have particularly strong ties with many departments in the Governments of Ontario and Canada.

Our MA program is also an ideal foundation for students with ambitions of pursuing a doctoral degree. Recent graduates have gone on to highly ranked PhD programs in Canada and the United States.

The PhD in Applied Economics program - like the department's research - focuses on Public Economic Policy. It has been crafted to prepare students for careers in policy making in the public and private sectors, as well as academic careers. While our program is challenging, we also believe in an ‘open-door’ atmosphere, which is intended to engage and stimulate graduate students in their chosen paths of research.
